  • In chronic pain conditions there are almost always changes in the nervous system leading to abnormal signalling among other things. This abnormal signalling can set off a cascade of disturbances in various aspects of the nervous system that creates a cycle of dysfunction that commonly manifests as pain.

Neural and Perineural therapy are two therapies that work to normalize the dysfunctional firing of the nervous system by creating a “reset” in the nerve tissue as well as decrease inflammation.

  • It involves injection of a local anesthetic, such as procaine or lidocaine, into regions of nerves, trigger points, scars, glands, and other tissues. The function of this is to serve as a reset to the nerve tissue and to normalize the dysfunctional pain signalling that is commonly part of chronic pain patterns. It works on the “neuroplasticity” of pain - helping to reset the "pain loops" that are created in our nervous system from the onset of injury.

  • It involves the injection of low concentration dextrose solution into regions of pain. It is at this lower concentration of dextrose that the effect of decreasing nerve inflammation occurs rather than at the higher concentrations used in Prolotherapy to stimulate the regeneration and growth of new tissue.

  • People with sensitivity or allergy to local anesthetic - this would generally be known if one has ever had dental work done.

  • The treatment course varies depending on the nature and severity and chronicity of the injury or pain. A typical treatment course is 2-6 treatments at weekly intervals.

  • Taking it easy for several hours as your body awareness or proprioception will be altered until the local anesthetic wears off. From there, a return to normal activity as readiness allows.
